What To Expect

The TMS treatment will begin with you comfortably sitting in one of our treatment rooms. A technician will place a BrainsWay helmet on your head to begin the magnetic stimulation. This helmet features an H-coil that sends magnetic pulses to targeted areas of the brain. It is typical to feel a bit of pressure and hear tapping sounds during your first few treatments. Each session takes about 20 minutes.

There are no persistent side effects and anesthesia is not needed. You can drive yourself to your appointment and go on with your day when it ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

dTMS is an FDA-approved, medical procedure that works by delivering MRI-strength magnetic pulses to noninvasively stimulate the brain. The pulses are delivered via a treatment “coil” in a helmet that is placed on the head. This targets the left prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain known to affect mood. The neurons are stimulated to release neurotransmitters. This allows for distant areas of the limbic system, the area associated with mood, to be activated and increase blood flow and glucose metabolism resulting in improved mood.

There are few to no side effects – the most common is a mild headache or scalp discomfort which does not typically continue after the first couple of treatments.

  • No undesirable effects on cognition, or memory loss.
  • No side effects like medications such as weight gain, sexual dysfunction, nausea, dry mouth, etc.

Treatment planning – patients do not have to stop taking medications in order to receive TMS.

We’ve seen about 2 in 3 patients see a decrease in symptoms.

One treatment per day. Treatment is 20 minutes, 5 days a week, for about 7 weeks.

The first step is to see one of our providers for a comprehensive psychiatric evaluation. The provider will then lay out option plans, and together you will decide what treatment option to utilize.

Brainsway dTMS Machines

Brainsway is the only company to manufacture FDA approved Deep TMS machines and has demonstrated better outcomes in clinical studies compared to other traditional TMS device companies.

In addition to Treatment Resistant MDD, the Brainsway machine has FDA approval for treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder as well, which is not the case with other traditional TMS machines.

Brainsway’s dTMS machines also have the capability to deliver novel and custom protocols such as Theta-Burst Stimulation which is a shortened 3-minute treatment that can produce similar benefits. This protocol is not yet covered by insurance but that may change soon, and we are still able to offer alternative TMS treatments like Theta-Burst Stimulation now. Lastly, Brainsway provides one of the most robust support programs for patients and clinical teams.
